The Internal Revenue Service‘s (IRS) Free File Guided Tax Software became available on Friday, January 10, for the 2025 Tax Filing Season.
IRS Free File allows taxpayers to submit their federal tax returns and payments at no cost. Typically, private tax preparers charge fees for some or all of their services.
According to the Free File Alliance, approximately 70% of American taxpayers (around 100 million) are eligible to use this service, with over 71 million returns filed since the program’s inception in 2003.

Key Information
Starting January 10, the IRS Free File program will begin accepting individual tax returns, and millions of taxpayers nationwide can access free software tools by visiting IRS.gov.
🚨 Please note that all federal income taxes are due by April 15, 2025, and:
- Individuals with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $84,000 or less in 2024 can utilize IRS Free File for their federal tax returns this year.
- For those with an AGI exceeding $84,000, the IRS provides Free File Fillable Forms, which are electronic versions of paper forms and are suitable for individuals who are comfortable preparing their own taxes using IRS instructions and publications.
🔎 This option allows taxpayers to digitally complete various common federal income tax forms and submit them through the IRS online e-file service. It is accessible to all taxpayers, regardless of income, residency, or age, and became available to taxpayers on January 27.
🛑 Another tax preparation option is IRS Direct File, which enables taxpayers to prepare and file their taxes directly with the IRS. This service can be accessed through the provided link.
